The terminology explained
AeroCone
the design of the airstrip/helipad runway marker
- AeroCone-RW: two sided runway markers
- AeroCone-H: four sided helipad markers
- AeroCone-T: smaller AeroCone used as taxiway marker
available in a range of colours
AeroPanel
larger panel reflectors used in pairs to mark the threshold and end of the runway
AME
Approved Medical Examiner, one of a list of doctors permitted to give a medical examination to amateur and professional pilots and air traffic controllers; accredited by the Civil Aviation Authority. Details available from the CAA website.
CAA
Civil Aviation Authority; responsible for all aspects of aviation safety and standards.
EASA
European Aviation Safety Agency; provides certification with regard to aviation safety standards
ground anchor
used to secure the runway marker to the ground, rather like a large tent peg
high visibility
easily observed even under poor weather conditions
infrared light
electromagnetic radiation with wavelengths longer than visible light but shorter than radio waves
ISO
International Organisation for Standardisation; the world’s most established quality framework, currently used by over 750,000 organisations in 161 countries
lead-in marker
runway marker providing visual guidance to pilots when flying in to land at a helipad which is close to buildings, trees etc. AeroPanel markers are ideal, however, when delineating the beginning/end of the runway.
licensed airstrip
an airstrip used for training purposes or running scheduled flights
NVG
Night Vision Goggles; allowing one to see in the dark, they amplify the available ambient light and are used particularly by the military.
photoluminescent
the ability to become luminescent and glow for a sustained period after exposure to visible light
pilot log
details of pilot’s flight plan, including route, safe altitude, fuel, take-off and arrival times; sent to appropriate airfields/Air Traffic Control centres on pilot’s route
polypropylene
thermoplastic resin; polymer of propylene, used to make moulded articles, hard, tough and light
retroreflective
thin vinyl film able to reflect light directly back to the source
unlicensed airstrip
an airstrip not used for training or scheduled air services; can include farmstrips and private helipads
UV light
ultraviolet light; represents a section of the overall electromagnetic spectrum of light extending from the blue end of the visible (400nm) to the x-ray region (100nm).
VFR
Visual Flight Rules; flying according to what the pilot can see
WAELS
Water Activated Emergency Lighting System; a stand-alone escape lighting system activated on contact with water also employing use of NVG-compatible photoluminescent strips and exit marker signs
