The perfect solution
The history
The Royal Air Force Merlin Mk3 helicopter was originally purchased by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) without formal emergency exit lighting, and therefore did not have an over-water clearance for carrying troops.
The present
However, the Merlin Mk3 has recently been equipped with the Water Activated Emergency Lighting System jointly developed by QinetiQ and Säkerhetspartner Norden AB, which means that the helicopter can now be used as troop transport.
The Water Activated Emergency Lighting System (WAELS)
- uses shockproof halogen lamps
- has a self-contained power supply which is activated upon contact with water
- employs NVG-compatible photoluminescent strips and exit marker signs
- has a unique jettison handle locator
- has been tested in UK turbid 5 (murky) conditions
- is easy to retrofit
- is lightweight and affordable
The WAELS, although originally designed to highlight helicopter emergency exits, can be transferred for use on any platform, from rotary and fixed-wing aircraft to marine applications.
