Safe landings
In the UK there are airfields which are both licensed and unlicensed.
- Where public scheduled flights and/or flying training takes place, a licence is required.
- Where the airstrip is for personal use only, no licence is required.
CAP 428 Safety Standards at Unlicensed Aerodromes including Helicopter Landing Sites, available from the Civil Aviation Authority (www.caa.co.uk), will provide you with all the relevant information connected with setting up a private helipad or airstrip but the main points to consider are:
- Do you want a licensed or unlicensed airfield?
- Are there any other airfields or airports in the area? You do not want to cause confusion or hindrance to any existing facilities.
- Do you have sufficient space to operate your aircraft safely? Runway length should be calculated for both take-off and landing.
- Consider any potential obstacles: buildings, trees, pylons etc.
- How are you going to mark your helipad or runway? Do not use anything which could cause confusion.
- Consider your location. Will the noise upset your neighbours?
- How often will you use the facilities? You might need planning permission.
- Make safety your highest priority and work with the CAA.
